-Upon meeting Meghan Cleary for the first time, Father Ralph de Bricassart is instantly protective of her. This bright eyed is the only girl in a family full of boys, and a mother who ignores her. It is when Meggie arrives late for her aunts party, that Ralph notices what a beautiful young woman she has turned into. And he realizes that he loves as a woman, but he cannot marry her because he is a Catholic Priest. Upon the death of Meggie's aunt, Drogheda is passed on to the catholic church, bringing in lots of money and giving Ralph an name in the catholic church. Meggie, broken because she cannot have Ralph, and Ralph broken because he "loves God more" leaves Meggie.

But when a devastating fire hits Drogheda, Meggie's family looses two of their own and Ralph returns to comfort Meggie only to find that her power over him is stronger than he thought.
