A mini tour of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. My family is not religious, but we were absolutely enchanted by this cathedral. Next time you are in the DC area, stop by and either take a tour or just roam around by yourself. It's very large and it takes a while to see everything, but it's well worth the time.

  • I'm hoping to go to Washington in a couple weeks. Really looking forward to seeing the sights! Do they really just let you wander around this place?

  • Yes, you're allowed to roam freely. It's very cool.

  • @readermichael I know it says you posted your comment a year ago, but I'd just like to say that, if you do get the chance to go, you really should. I don't think you would be disappointed.

The grounds are great and just the sheer size is incredibly impressive. It is actually one of the largest in the world. And keep in mind that the first stone was put into place over a century ago.

Also, you can take an elevator to observation corridors that run along the front and the view is awesome.

  • @readermichael Context...Imagine looking at Westminster Abbey or Notre Dame in Paris as gazing into the eyes of an ancient, a witness to more than most of us can imagine. Structural experts studying Washington's Cathedral suggest, barring quake or violence, that building will stand for the better part of 2,000 yrs. At Washington's cathedral, you're looking into the eyes of a baby, in the same family bloodline and w/ the same potential for longevity as its ancient siblings.

  • :D I'm going too! :) In august. I live in pa, so it'll take about 4 and a half hours to get there. I've been there twice already, but have yet to see the national cathedral, which is where I'll be heading to first :)

I've been to another spectacular cathedral: the cathedral of learning in pittsburgh. its huge! :) most classrooms inside though, but its awesome!

Have fun on your trip! Another interest place is arlington national cemetary. the guard change was spectacular and quiet

  • I'm glad you and your family enjoyed it. I must admit I don't really share your enthusiasm. It looks much like any other Anglican cathedral I've been to, only the stonework and the carvings and everything are so new. For me it is the rich and colourful history that makes these buildings so interesting, and the sense of touching the same worn stonework and carvings as people centuries ago. I'm not sure how I'd feel in something that looked similar but was so new and essentially untouched.
