James Kalm wheels into Chelsea for this, the third exhibition of Joan Snyder's work at Betty Cuningham. A recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship's "Genius Award", Snyder has been a respected presence on the New York painting scene since the early seventies. Her impassioned use of rugged materials such as branches, flower stalks, dirt and fabric give her paintings a facture reflective of raw nature, rather than a mere allusion of it. Despite the brusqueness, there is a sensual and joyful playfulness to these paintings displayed in the rich palette and varied surfaces used by the artist.
I think Mr. Kalm may have coined a new art movement. Crap on crap. I feel the same way about a lot of that urban detritus blah blah blah stuff.

awesome show. great art from a real artist. very nice.
@hankjunior my favorite artist that does this style is don west. really captures clever uses of negative space filled with backgrounds, etc. still can't figure just how it's done, maybe painting with solvents through translucent layers?

Why is Roberta Smith so standoffish? Joan Snyder is an earnest artist. There's obviously a lot of work into those paintings. Reminds me of Rauschenberg's Red Painting. "Grotesque" is a weird word to apply to those paintings. "Juicy red dots", that was a good one...

I'm sure these are ten times better to experience in person.
