Hi everybody! Here, for your educational enjoyment, I present to you the individual harmony parts for The Beatles song "This Boy". If you haven't already seen it (and heard it), my video of the full song can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taUIlhH7S0o

This video starts off with John's part.
George's part starts at 2:36.
Paul's part starts at 4:42.

  • This is great. I have recorded it myself, but just can't get the sound correct! Is there a special way to mix it to get the great sound? John

  • @TheSting496 Try to match the sound of the individual instruments. Take into account things like compression, and the amount of reverb on the vocals.

  • Paul actually sings the melody for the verses. John and George sing harmonies to the melody. John Sings a third, but below the melody, and George a fifth, but above John, making a really interesting blend. It's like a first inversion triad, the way the parts are set up.

  • @connersaltzer I still feel that it's John who sings the melody (his part is far more melodic than either George's or Paul's). On top of that, consider the instrumental version that George Martin arranged for the soundtrack to the movie "A Hard Day's Night" (the melody in that version is the same as John's vocal part). Being the Beatles' producer, GM would know what the melody was (and the Beatles themselves would have had the chance to set him straight if he was wrong).

  • a joke: and where is the voice of Ringo?

  • @kuelap11 :)

  • @MrEdcrowley100 Yes, I think my mouth is a bit weird in this video :) I actually mentioned it in the description for my video of "This Boy" (the full song). I didn't realize it when I was recording it. I was just trying to emulate the vocal tones from the original recording. If you check out some of my other videos ("When I'm 64" and "Because" for example), you'll see that I don't always sing like that.

    Great job...

  • Please, make more videos!

  • Very useful! Harmonies are so often overlooked in today's music!

  • I've never been able to figure out the George part... thank you so much! For an old (62) Beatles fan like me, this is GOLD!
