I do not agree with Mark Pendergrest very often; and his saying that Tangerine Dream had a sound that seemed like the machines were playing themselves is ludicrous-- when one listens to a record like Tangram it is easily as complex as something by Yes or Genesis in its own way--
the whole Krautrock sound was very stream of conscious- and so TD becoming far more "planned" was definitely moving away from that--
I personally find Stratosfear, Cyclone and Force Majeure best EM records ever
So, how was T-Dream NOT experimental? I don't recall any other music from that period that sounded quite the same (even Klaus didn't have the same complexity of sequences and textures). You have to listen 3-4 times before you even know where the melodies are. But that's a small quibble. Great documentary.
Mark Pendergrest's woefully, slapdash commentary is by far the weakest element of this documentary. He's shit isn't he?
