Well whadaya know - there ARE tunnels outside of Korea! All kidding aside, I'd for many years known about this one that's only 1.5 miles from the place where I grew up in Freedom Township, Portage County, Ohio. Ever since I began my flute journey in early 2007, I'd intended to come back here to pay it a musical visit. However, until now I hadn't been able to do it properly because there's no way to play inside it unless I stand in the water (I'm actually wearing rubber boots in the video.) This tunnel is situated under what used to be a railroad that ceased to operate at least 20 years ago. In recent years, an approximately 7-mile section of it between the towns of Mantua & Garrettsville was converted into a very nice hiking trail... For this video, I'm proudly showing off one of my latest flute acquisitions, which is in fact my first purchase from Brent Haines of Woodsounds Flutes fame. This particular model is rather atypical of what he normally produces (i.e. it's NOT shiny...hehe). Brent tells me that it is in fact a reproduction of an old Taos-style flute from days of yore - so very appropriate as it just so happens that I now live near Taos! This repro was commissioned by none other than Robert Mirabal, Taos Pueblo resident & superb Native American flute performer. Brent's re-creation is an aesthetically appealing sight & sound to behold: extremely well-crafted, perfectly tuned, incredibly responsive...and LOUD! Even so, the vibrant stream that passes through this tunnel does its best to give the Taos flute & me a run for our money, volume-wise, but on the whole, I think this video & the others in the series turned out pretty well. One final comment: even though I came up with this little tune in the Earthship near Taos amid the arid desert climate, this "moist" version beats it hands-down with its relaxing blend of flute & water sounds.

  • This creative

  • @Alis5057: Thank you so much! These flutes can really bring out the creative spark in me. You should try to play them, too.

  • So this flute is made of Black Locust wood? I think thats really cool. There are lots of black locust trees at the end of my street and I had heard that it was a very hard wood. So I often found myself looking at the trees and wondering what a flute made from black locust would sound like. I guess this answers my question.

  • @Tvisor: The tone of this flute is exceptional, and as I mentioned in the information box, pretty LOUD! Mr. Haines did an amazing job crafting this one. It plays effortlessly, too. Thanks much for your continuing interest.

  • Really sounds awesome!

  • @Getaro: Thanks! I consider myself lucky whenever I locate places such as this to play Native American-style flutes in. Tunnels greatly enhance the whole expressive experience, and if there are also suitable nature sounds such as birds, insects, or running water, so much the better. Take care!

  • @piriajeoshi I will possibly try to play the flute

  • @piriajeoshi Yeah I don't play those kind of flutes, I play ocarinas, but it's the same thing! I also enjoy it when you can hear the nature around!

And the tunnel really makes the song enchanting!

    Best regards!

  • @type3secretion: Wow, thanks! Underground river canyon... hmmm... now THER;S an idea! Know where I can locate one? Seriously, this locale turned out much better than I ever expected it to. Cheers!

  • @dickie2750: Thanks dude! The combination of tunnel + running water + low & loud NAF is indeed sublime. I hope to make it back to this one again sometime soon.
