Aram Khachaturian:

Sabre Dance (Final Act of Gayane)
Transcribed by Jascha Heifetz

Violin: Jascha Heifetz.

Notes from M.K., Sinfoniette.
-Recently, I downloaded the complete Heifetz set by Torrent. It took me 3 days, and it was 64 cds or so. I was looking at his encores and others, and thought the only thing Heifetz didnt play was the Khachaturian and the Saint Saens concerto. He played the Elgar, Conus, Wieianski, the famous concertos, Bruch 2, Walton, Rosza and insanely many short pieces. However, I was starting to get dismayed because I love Khachaturian, and there was no Khachaturian music in there; I really didnt expect it to be in there, but hey, there was the Elgar and the Conus and the Rosza and the Bruch No. 2. Why not the Khachaturian? But I found this hidden little gem. I like it as much as I love the Khachaturian. And I think the general public might love this one more than the Tchaikovsky. Enjoy! M.K.

  • Is this like wood? or is it rly bad bowing.

  • Really? Heifetz had impeccable technique. (It does sounds like it has some col legno in there)

  • Wonderful piano and violin transcription. I never knew who composed the original piece until now. One hears this merely once and NEVER forgets it thereafter.

  • But forgets the title and the composer. When I first heard this (6 months ago, when I first got into classical), I knew I heard this somewhere. That Tom and Jerryish tone... Khachaturian was a genius.

  • when I was a kid, my music teacher took two of us to see Heifetz perform at the Hollywood Bowl.... Se sat in the teacher's box about 20 feet away from Heifetz .... I had chills running up and down my spine during the performance. The thrill of a lifetime.

  • @Sinfoniette there is definitely col legno in the part, and it's a blast to play.

  • @georgeharper1 Heifetz wanted his violin to sound that way,my friend.

  • incredible

  • @georgeharper1 Even if it did sound bad (which I don't think it did) Heifetz would have done it on purpose for effect.

  • @nareksaribekyan You should try to listen. You may not like the transcription but the musicianship is undeniable. A marvellous interpretation by Heifetz.

  • Une version très imagée.Certains semblent ne pas comprendre le parti-pris de ce son très boisé,poutant très évident !

  • Perfekt ,Tack !

  • Sure Heifetz has a great technique. But this interpretation is awful. Heifetz didn't get it right. And this piece is not funny at all as many may think of it, viewing it in a wrong context.

The transcription missed a lot of things - only noise is left, no music. They lost the light melody moving above rhythmic structure...

  • wow, it's like a two man symphony.
