"I Only Have Eyes for You" is a popular song by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Al Dubin, written in 1934 for the film Dames where it was introduced by Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler.
This song is obviously recorded live hence the distance, not off key in the slightest. Yes she used heroine and it helped produce those lovely, warm tones. A martyr to her craft. People should stop focusing on singers 'downfalls' as no one is perfect just enjoy the legacy, it's what they would have wanted.
Wow! Didn't realize we had so many critics and therapist is our mix. Billie Holiday was a great artist of her time and goodness know what she had to endure in a time of total racism and prejudice. No one comments on and puts down icons like Elvis, Janis, Amy and a host of others who have succumbed to the disease of addiction, instead you idolized them...When does the persecution end. Lady Day is an icon in her own right who are you to criticize especially when she's dead and long gone.
Well, you could be very wrong! Have you ever heard her sing without the use of heroin? Those insane notes you're talking about are notes that were off-key. Jazz can fool you that way. That's like saying smoking cigarettes helps you think better. It's called denial of a serious habit that will eventually consume you or even kill you. People who use drugs or smoke cigarettes can give you 101 reasons why they should continue using them but they can never give you 101 reasons why they should stop.
@Ironknee40 No, I don't throw stones at dead bodies though I believe it would hurt more if that body were alive. Yes, I do believe she had a choice whether or not to say no to using heroin. I don't believe someone was holding a gun to her head but who knows but in the natural, everyone has a right to make their own decisions about their life including Billie. As for the "Pal" comment, you decide on its definition. If you look it up in the dictionary it's still defined as friend or chum.
Caught off guard, yes I was made angry. Do you usually throw stones at dead bodies and do you really think in Billie"s case that she was in a position to say "no"?
Your third sentence was superfluous and unkind. On reflection I don't know anybody who uses the term "pal" in a friendly way nowadays. Shame perhaps, but that is a living language for you. Generally I agree with you: Just say no!
@Ironknee40 Apparently I'm not your friend so don't call me pal unless you always tell your friends to stuff it and if that's the case, who would want you as a friend? Why are you so offended. Wasn't Billie a heroin addict? You know what they say, sometimes the truth hurts and I guess you just felt the pain. Before the heroin maybe she sounded better but it only goes to show you, Just say no! Good day.

Billie had a very strange vocal but she sounds off key in this. She's singing over here and the band is over there. Maybe it was the heroin.
