August 30, 2008: Young Brown Pelicans, hatched this spring in the Southern California Area, have been flying up the coast. Underweight, starving, dehydated, they have been picked up and brought to the International Bird Rescue Research Center in Cordelia, California. When they gain weight and are healthy, they are banded with USFWS bands and released. A couple of weeks ago I released seven. These five were released today at Fort Baker, near the Golden Gate Bridge. Tentative at first, they walked out of their carriers and flew to the water. The last one took his time. Happily, he found his companions, bobbing about in the water.
