  • If the water flows or drips in at a steady rate, it can be used to tell the time. These days it is possible to buy a similar electric device that has metal balls raised onto a series of tilting pathways to create the same effect. Search for martinhwatson and you will see my website. Email from there if you want more details.

  • Water fills a vessel, then when the WEIGHT of the water reaches a certain amount, it loses balance, like a kitchen scale that is too heavy on one side. In this particular case the water is electrically pumped, but traditional ones may have been filled by a natural spring. Continued below.
