  • has anyone made the conclusion that real aussie trains are basically a cross breed between american and english trains??? not meant to cause any offense but there are real similarities between the two that almost look like both designs come together in australia

  • I've long thought the same thing and I won't be alone. It's basically a blending of two different practices to give the results that suit local conditions. Keeping in mind that many Australian's originally came from the UK, it was natural that UK railway practices would be imported here with them. But then it was realised that this wasn't entirely suited to local conditions, so US practices were used or combined. With some European equipment thrown in for good measure. :)

  • hello were can i get a ho scale g class shell like this from cheers

  • This is an N scale model. HO ones had been available from Powerline until recently. As far as I know, no HO scale G class models are currently available new. Powerline shall re-release theirs with a new mechanism and Austrains are also working on one. So, drought now, but the flood is coming. For now you could try looking for secondhand ones. Finding only a shell isn't likely to be easy.

  • hello, nice layout, what are the reliability and running characteristics like on these Aust-N-rail engine units? Is it an American mechanism?

  • The Aust-N-Rail locos use Atlas mechanisms, so quite reliable.

  • @Amtrak1194 I'd have to agree with emdB67. Early Autralian railways were pure British but eventually a local 'flavour' evolved. In the north west of the country, the iron ore railways are pure Class 1 US with off the shelf US locos from EMD and GE. We're also one of the few countries outside the US that operates double-stack container trains, although on the east coast, there are too many restrictions (tunnels, low bridges, etc.) to allow stack trains. Maybe one day.
