A happily married wife and mother as well as a successful author, Dani Shapiro had reached the middle of her life and found herself with more questions than answers. Time seemed to be moving too fast. She felt as if she had reached the brief pause at the very top of a roller coaster, and was about to plunge, headlong, unstoppable, into what Carl Jung calls the afternoon of life. What did it all mean? Was this all it was? Just a hodge-podge of carpools, homework, dinner dates, emails, meetings, to-do lists?
