Well, from my experience with virtual worlds, the people who inhabit them have been actually diagnosed with some kind of mental disorders (or might be just the ones I encountered??) and they really have NO REAL LIFE. The virtual is their life. They lose sleep in order to be there as long as possible, get married there and so on. So actually this might be a new psychological breakthrough- instead drugs (with their side effects and so on).

Hi Redrumax. Thx for your comment. I don't know who you've been hanging out w/ in SL, but your experience is generally opposite my own. I found many people who use SL to expand their 1st life social lives, not to replace them. Plus, if you try not to think of 1st life and SL as separate entities, but all part of one life experience, the urge to stigmatize is not so great. I completely agree with you that it has its place in psychology, and that it can reduce reliance on pharmaceuticals.
