spectacular landing in madeira RWY 05 on a windy day

This is one of the most challenging airports that I`ve ever been. I`m landing in Madeira island airport (LPMA) for runway 05. This approach is similar to the old Hong Kong Kai Tak approach. The difference is that there is no IGS. It`s a VOR approach that will end when turning base leg. For fuel saving a CDA (constant descent approach) approach is used whenever possible according to flight manual. That will bring you close to the old Kai Tak approach. When on base leg instead of a chekerboard you have 2visual reference points to turn final. GELO and ROSARIO ponts. Winds are often turbulent as they come downhill. This one is really worth watching.

not really! It`s good and safe! If you follow all the safety golden rules! The scenery is great, much better than seen here. Mountains to the west go up to 6000 ft, the scenery is even greater if you`re coming from the west or northwest.

You do not know the Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro, especially the approach for runway 02R.
