Quit bashing the coastguard. They protect our people from all homeland security threats: natural disasters/the sea (and assorted maritime accidents), terrorists, drug cartels, etc etc etc.
Their missions vary greatly. Some, like SAR, are domestic, but that doesn't mean that the coastguard is noncombative/not DoD oriented. There are coastie SEALS, you know.

They're not part of it, but legally they can act under the authority of the DOD and can be shift into the DOD during a time of war...like in WWI and WWII.

armed forces are to protect the country , marines soldiers and navy sailors rarley do that in this times , going to afganistan and iraq and going to somalia ( navy ) is not protecting america , the only branch that does it is coast guard

and just because the coast isn't as combat oriented as the other four branches doesn't make coast guard sailors and airman any less of heros than soldiers and mariens.
