i think that she can sing anything beautifully, and that a lot of people on here seem to pass judgement harshly when they cannot themselves sing such a song so beautifully. Her vibrato is healthy and released... there is nothing wrong with it in this setting either. if you took this song into a voice teacher and sang it this way, there would be applause, not harsh criticism. Some of the vowels are a bit strange, i agree, but she sings healthily and wonderfully.

This is lovely, not a traditional interpretation, but the melody is beautifully sustained and she uses perfect intonation. In a way I prefer this as it is her farewell to Aeneas and the world and it is deeply personal and Renée puts more emotion into it than Price or Norman. Magnifique!

Michelle Ivey in Paul Schwartz's - Dido song
fascinates me. So feminine, gentle and technically perfect. Unfortunately I lost the trail of Her.

I had to respond to this upon hearing it. True, "taste" is subjective and we all have our favourite singers. I'm no great fan of Renée's and I've heard many sing this, and live too (thanks Ms Bernarda Fink), but in all honesty, she lives this and my first reaction was one of awe. True, she slides up and down a few too many times, but you can not take away the quality that is present in the voice nor the emotional intensity and colour.

i am not an expert, but this one here is definitely touching and memorable. not too smooth which i find perfect in the context

One word to describe this: EXQUISITE!

I love Renee's voice but I agree with most of the comments. This aria is not for her. Leontyne Price's is excellent as is Jessye Norman's.

Fleming has a wonderful voice for music such as Mozart, but she should stay away from earlier operas, she butchers them, there are very few sopranos today who have the versatility to do as much justice to Purcell as they do to Strauss, I'd say Jessye Norman is one of them

@reecty01 One does not need to be able to SING in order to be able to HEAR. She should NOT touch baroque. She vibrates it to death!
This interpretation is very original. The voice is full of sobs and Renee Fleming dares what the others do not dare. Sometimes it is on the verge of the bad taste but it's worth it because it is moving.
