3:45 -- Shipley's fudging things over. Why should tenure replacements originate in automatic conversions from CUPE's unit 2 (contract faculty)? Why not have open competition for these appointments?

Job security is CUPE's euphemism for more appointments based in Union seniority rather than open competition/ qualifications. The now expired CBA already contains amble job security measures, measures which essentially gaurantee that long-serving contract faculty will be offered courses from year to year.

I have to say I hope that York's enrollment next year nosedives and they have to cut most of their TA positions. I think U of T is going to be even busier next year!

Job security? Who the hell has the nerve to talk about this in this economy. I have taken money out of my retirement fund to pay for my son's education. People go into teaching because they are afraid or cannot make it in the real world. These people wouldn't last a week in the private sector. Give me a break, you only work 9 months a year. You don't give a damn about the students. All you care about is getting as much money for as little work as possible.

What's ironic is that, while the contract profs are striking for better job security, the number of frustrated students who may wind up leaving York means that the university may wind up cutting people anyway due to a low turnout.
I hope it doesn't come to that, since I wouldn't wish job loss on anybody, but still...the length of the strike may wind up doing more to damage people's jobs than secure them.
