I was told by two separate pilot sources, spaced years apart and geographically distant that the SR-71 actually did Mach 8. One was buddies with an SR-71 pilot, the other was a very senior Airforce officer who had a few too many at a party in Okinawa.

@majorpeck If they went mach 4 they didn't have the altitude ability, and the ones that could climb over 80K feet couldn't fly fast enough. So the plane was untouchable, in fact I can't think of any missle airframe even today that could shoot down a mach 4 aircraft at 80,000 feet.

@zippythewonderslugoh not true! some SAM can reach speeds over mach 4. Besides the fact that at that time it did not exist and it was not sposed to be in U.S.S.R. air space!!!
