Aleppo's Silver Trinkets

The switch to silver is another sign of the economic difficulties in Syria, affecting even the more affluent classes. But this comes as good news to Aleppo's artisans specialized in the making of Silver jewelery and trinkets. The greatest beneficiaries, however, seem to be the country's visiting expats who, in the words of one merchant buy everything they fancy, including "imitation" designer jewelery that can hardly be distinguished from the originals. Next time you see your Syrian friends wearing designer jewelery, just think of it as a sign of their wealth by Syrian standards.
