AEU Survey of Public School Principals -- Part One

The annual AEU survey of 409 Victorian public school principals revealed that nearly 40% of secondary schools have teachers taking classes outside their area of expertise.

33% of schools experienced difficulties in attracting teachers and were forced to reduce subjects as a result.

29% of all schools experienced problems filling teacher positions last year. For secondary schools this figure was 51% and 50% for schools near state borders.

Victorian public education will continue to deteriorate unless the State Government significantly improves the salary and conditions on offer to teachers

Victorian teachers have been left with no option but to continue industrial action.

  • @markv33 I am a Victorian teacher, I earn less than the average income after 4 years service. I pay nearly $800 for health care (and no, we don't have additional options for health care than other Australians), most schools do not have adequate heating/cooling and the kids suffer, I work about 70% of school holidays planning, assessing, doing paperwork, and my average hours working at school is around 10 hours a day including weekends, and until recently was on contract, with no stability

  • markv33, if that's what you honestly think then you are a fool. Teachers in Australia don't receive healthcare options, can't retire after 20 years, and certainly don't work 8am-3pm. As for making "more than the average American income", well if that's true then it probably says more about the pitiful wage levels in the US than anything else.

  • Teachers make more than the average American income by a long shot! And that's for 9 months work. They have some of the best health care options money can buy. They are cool in the summer/hot in the winter. They get all the kids Vacations days in addition to the 3 mo. off in summer. They can retire with full benefits after only 20 years of service. They work day is from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. They get an average of 3to 4% raises every year, and talk about job stability... Lets keep it real!!!!
