Hello,
How did you get your interface like that? I just installed Ubuntu today (new in the Linux universe) and have the version ubuntu-11.10.
My 'task bar' at at the left side of the screen but I want to have it at the top, like you do. I cannot find the option for that, since I only can change my background and theme.
Thanks in advance.

It no long works on 11.10 - you can change your root password with sudo passwd, but not edit in - gedit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
you should get a error now.

So simple, Thank you for the clarification. I could not use SU before authentication failed, so I did this and it works fine now. many thanks

gedit is just a gnome text editor...
you can use any text editor u wish...
for example:
kate /etc/...
that will work if u got kate editor installed
