An Akron, Ohio, couple made headlines in February of 2011, after their story was featured by ABC News.  Khristi and Charles Cunningham's 17-month-old children, Triniti and Ghabriael, are fraternal twins who look very different: Triniti has dark skin, eyes and "the classic dark features of an African American," but "Gabe" has "ivory-white" skin with blonde hair and blue eyes.  The twins' mother, Khristi, is white and their father, Charles, is black. 

The racial differences between the twins are said to "involve many genes" that "are more complex in determining looks than those for eye color."  ABC News quotes Dr. Ronald Bachman, retired  head of the genetics department at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in California, as saying that the twins' different appearance is "no big deal" from his viewpoint.

Khristi Cunningham says she has gotten a lot of questions from people when they see the babies together.  Cunningham says she's even been asked, "Are you sure they are twins?"  She tells ABC News that the family does "get a lot of stares." 

The Cunningham's story was told on the "Mixed and Happy" blog on February 20, 2011.  In the post, Khristi Cunningham recalls that when the twins were born nearly three months early, they were hospitalized for some time in the pediatric intensive care unit - and their skin color threw hospital staff for a loop.  Cunningham says nurses called Triniti and Gabe "the black and white twins" and even asked if she was "sure they had the right babies."

For her part, Khristi Cunningham says the twins' appearance - and the reactions of others - ultimately isn't what matters, telling ABC News that "No one gets to say if they are black or white" and adding that "it's not a choice and to me they are perfect and will grow up to be loved."

the only race i dont think anyone should mix with is the race that uses the word "nigger". that word actually means ignorant, not african american.

i have 3 boys with the same black man (im white) and all 3 look like eachother but they all have different hair, skin color, and eyes.

@misspinkmey that is a well entrenched politically-correct myth,but it IS a myth.We ARE different races,history and science has proven this again and again.And our racial differences go far beyond our skin and cultural backgrounds.The only people who have twisted and perverted race are the egalitarians and the jewish academics who want to eliminate the concept of race as part of their racial agenda for the western world.

@IwontConform btw, your genes are already "polluted" by years of migration, imperialism, colonization, etc. by everyone's ancestors. Your ancestors moved to the US from somewhere in Europe and their ancestors got to Europe by expanding, conquering or becoming a slave/servant from some other land not in Europe. As they moved toward Europe then eventually the US, they married and procreated with other cultures including blacks. That is why some people in every culture have "nonstandard" features.

@IwontConform Obviously you didn't watch the video. If you saw the mom and the "white" baby strolling down the street you would have thought the dad was white but in reality that baby is half "black". Race is real but we as a society have twisted it & perverted it to mean something else. We all are of the same race, we have different cultural/ethnic backgrounds and we have different levels of melanin in our skin. We are NOT different races.

thee kids are beautifull my daughter is of mixed race and has blond hair and green eyes ,, it has nothing to do with race.
