Just a short clip to demonstrate the sound between the crunch channel and the od2 channel on my Marshall JCM2000 DSL50. I start with the crunch gain at about 6 and od2 gain at 3, then set the crunch gain at 10 and od2 gain at 5. The last bit is the od2 gain at 10.

The mods are simply a 100pF c12 treble bleed cap on the od channel and a JJ ECC832 tube in the V1 position. Together they bring the od2 channel sound much closer to the crunch channel so I can just set the od volume a bit higher for solos.

I used a Fender strat with Dimarzio YJM & HS-3 pickups and a 4x12 cab with Celestion Vintage 30s for the clip.

Mind the crappy playing and the out of tune guitar... :)

  • Great stuff- the difference between the channels always annoyed the crap outta me.

I snipped C12 on mine a while back, but it didn't make that much of a difference. Does the ECC382 make a big change? Or do I really need a better suited cap in C12 and the ECC382?

    Thanks for any help!

  • This is the combination that worked best for me. The ecc832 lowers the gain a bit on the od channel so I can turn it up a bit more and get more bass.

Also the C12 value doesn't have any effect on the sound if the gain is turned all the way up.

  • Very, very nice man. That adjustment you make at :50 brings out a beautiful early AC/DC tone. You do the mods yourself or have an ampman do it? And isn't the DSL totally friggin' awesome? Even bone-stock it sounds great. Great job!

  • Thanx :) I just soldered a socket for the c12 cap and tried different values until I found the right one. The green channel is still stock. Also changing the V1 ecc83 to an ecc832 affects only the od channel.

  • what voltage capacitor did you use? I read 400v is good but I cant find any.

  • Can't remember exactly but it's probably a 50 V since that's what the original cap was according to the schematics.

  • thats not a fucking mod !

  • @surfacexmusic i just read more into the comments and found my answer sorry to bother you! so the original 470pf was really a 50v? ok then that settles it. thanks for posting this video helps me out alot, whoever thumbs downed it is really dumb. :)

  • love the video comparision, im at that state of wanting to change c12 that you were two years ago lol. what V was the pf rated at? at stores i can only find 50v and some have said i should probably go ahead and find a 500v just cause i should.

  • @jay31486 You only need the "high voltage" caps for the power supply filtering. Treble bleed caps are fine being the little ceramic caps you can buy at radioshack.

  • What is the difference between dsl 50 and dsl 100?

I remember first trying the dsl 50 and really liked it, but then later tried a dsl 100 and didn't really like it at all.

  • Doesn't sound any different than stock. JJ's suck ass in Marshalls. To dark. Tung-Sols in the pre amp are the only way to go as far as current production tubes in a DSL..

  • Do you have a before sound? What was the original problem? Was this mod also to reduce of the fizzy OD channel sound. How do I identify where the OD channel bleed cap is. What value was there before? Did you try other values? Thanks.

  • doesn´t sound great

  • I put in new tubes, JJ Tubes, got the amp checked, adjusted the bias and now it sounds great in all modes. Condensators and "stuff" inside can change and loose it's value/specs, but easiest to try is new tubes.

  • I own this head as well and my clean channel has such an annoying hiss. What did you guys do to clean it up?
