How to Speed Up your Computer (Vista)

As you continue to use your computer repeatedly, your computer slows down. To keep your computer running smoothely, you will have to do some maintenance. Learn how to speed up your computer now.

The following has the best effect in increasing performance

* Buy a new computer (If you have the money)
* Get more RAM
* Get a better Video Card
* Downgrade to Windows XP or Upgrade to Windows 7
* Format the harddrive and reinstall Windows

The list below has a great effect in increasing performance

* Remove unneccesary programs and files
* Remove unneccesary startup entries
* Configure the performance settings
* Run Disk Cleanup
* Run Disk Defragmentor
* Disable unneeded services (Caution: Requires research * http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm *)
* Remove any malware (Viruses)
* Set power option to high performance
* Clean & defragment the registry (Dangerous)
* Use top-notch cleanup software (Recommended: CCleaner, Tuneup Utilities)

The list below has minimal effect in increasing performance

* Manually cleaning temporary files
* Remove unneeded components
* Configure desktop settings
* Reducing the recycle bin size (Not recommended)
* Reducing system restore size (Not recommended)
* Leave the desktop empty (Not recommended)

The following has NO effect in increasing performance

* RAM Optimizers
* Cleaning the Windows Prefetch (Makes it slower actually)

can someone help me plz? i tried using the disk defragmenter and after about 6 hours, its still running. is it supposed to take that long or something is wrong?

@vibol03 it takes a while, prob about 2 hours. It takes even longer if you are using the computer while it is defragmenting and how heavily fragmented the disk is.

@killmaster3415 You won't be able to see any UAC pop ups in my videos. Camtasia studio 7 does not record UAC pop ups. Or did I interpret your question wrongly?

how about you use recovery manager and restore the PC to its factory settings? wipes all junk, viruses, etc. CAUTION! Be sure to make a back up first, becuase it wipes EVERYTHING!

@OniYoshiable It's even better if you just re-install the operating system because factory setting usually have unnecessary applications installed on them like netflix etc. However, it is impossible to reinstall the OS cleanly with a recovery DVD. That is what I hate about laptop and desktop manufacturers.
