He was Poppa to us all
He taught us lean and mean
No extra words at all
Keep it simple and keep it clean
But there came a day
When there was nothing left to say
"Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know."
Don't, he said, just stand by
Jump right into your own story
Forget the how and ask the why
Drugs and guns and everything gory
But when the going got tough
Being a pro wasn't enough
"Buy the ticket, take the Ride"
It's just fine to hear the voices
It's okay to have them chatter away
But it's not okay to do what they say
Alone is fine, but lonely is when the voices go away
I choose the method and I choose the way
I choose the time and I choose the day
A real street corner poet
In old clothes and a new soul
Lonely quest and verse
Not sure if he reached his goal
Or if they just stopped the song and talk
And faded like first grade chalk
"All of us have a place in history. Mine is clouds."
