While building my 6-panel cabinet recently, I decided to capture the process of mortising for a butt hinge. With a router, a small straight bit, a chisel, and some careful layout, you'll find mortising for hinges to be fun and easy.
These simple tips will make the process much easier:
- Create some sort of story stick for repeatability.
- Use a marking gauge and knife to scribe the hinge locations for ultimate accuracy.
- Use a router remove the bulk of the material at a consistent depth.
- Use a sharp chisel to fine-tune the fit.

  • whats the difference between the bosch router and your bigger festool one?

  • @Pedrofreestyle97 I am not too familiar with the Bosch router. You might want to look at the specifications on the respective manufacturer's websites.

  • I agree with the look of having the butt set in but for practical use its nice to have the function of the doors being able to be open to 180deg. just my opinion though.

  • @perf59 The doors do open to 180 degrees......

  • Hey Marc! What type of external mic. do you use.

  • Typically the barrel of the butt should stand proud of the door and jamb, with only the leaves mortised in.

  • Nice Japanese chisels.

  • @TheWoodWhisperer okay thanks.

  • @thewooforfun I learned quite a bit on my own. But I do try to take 1-2 classes per year, and I spent some time training with David Marks.
