http://www.euronews.net/ People power now also means pedal power for the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Protesters in New York have had to come up with alternative ways of producing energy for heat and cooking after authorities confiscated their generators.

Fellow activists in Boston came to the rescue, helping to provide expertise and raw materials. Bikes were duly connected to makeshift chargers and all that remained was for volunteers to get pedalling!

  • Powering electric appliances using human energy is one of the most wasteful and inefficient energy transfer systems you can imagine. The roughly 100 watts generated in short spurts has to be replaced in the human body at an atrocious loss of at every step in the process. Of this 100 watts delivered to the peddles, transferred to the generator, connected to the battery, you will be very lucky to retrieve 20 watts to charge your laptop.

  • The bike used to transfer the "clean human energy" to the generator is manufactured in an electrically powered factory, getting it's energy from the grid which is powered by coal, nuclear, and hydro.

The material consumed in the bike factory is mined using diesel powered equipment, the iron is processed using electricity from the same grid.

While producing this "free energy" the human body expels large amounts of CO2 while consuming large amounts of oxygen.

  • Human powered, clean energy, free energy. Right? If humans power the generators, what powers the humans? Agriculture comes to mind. Food is the source of human energy and it is grown by farmers, driving diesel powered tractors, using petroleum based fertilizer, and delivered to the market by gasoline powered trucks and cooked on emission free electric stoves powered by coal burning power plants.
