I have also heard (from Steve's side, in McGee's book on Steve, I think) that it was about how McCoury was billed, and that he wanted more recognition. Might be a bit of all these. In any case, I don't think ALL band splits are about money, some are about egos.

@nilradem ~ it was money, pure n simple... Del asked for money but in interviews couldn't be so vulgar to say that. So he made a cock n bull story up about the cussing which Steve satirised on his next album.
But, like ALL band splits, it was money.

@nilradem I love Steve..he is a true artist! I'm glad he got it together when he did; if he hadn't I don't think he would be with us today. Speaking of his vulgar language..it is the reason he no longer plays Merlefest. Steve was backstage w/ Doc & his wife and was using very strong language..Rosa told him that he had to stop or he was not welcome at the festival. He chose not to quit..he left and has never been back. Merlefest is in my hometown..a volunteer told me about this. (Love Doc too!)
