  • Keeping the bat barrel above the hands keeps the bunted ball on the ground, which is what you want from an execution standpoint and a safety standpoint. The injuries you witnessed, while unfortunate, were probably the result of jabbing at the ball, rather than letting the ball hit the bat. In fact, it would seem to me that getting hit in the face would be more likely if the batter kept the bat flat as you suggest, as this increases the chances that the ball would be popped up in the air.

  • having a bat at an up angle will direct a misdirected ball right toward the batters eye. I have wittnessed serious injuries with balls being deflected towards the batters face. Keeping the bat staight out will give less of a chance of deflecting ball towards the face of the batter. I would recommend this at high school level and younger.
