Virada Social is the main project run by the Rukha Institute; its objective is to contribute to the eradication of child labor and send children to school and complementary educational activities, and to promote the economic and social autonomy of their families through the development of potentialities and building life projects.
On January 2006, the Rukha Institute mapped child labor at stoplights on the Pinheiros region, and found that the majority of children working there were from the Southern zone of Sao Paulo -- which was then defined as the project's area of action.
The Rukha Institute looked for the families of these boys and girls and proposed a partnership, in which they would assure the children were left out of the streets and in turn would receive financial and social aid -- directed towards achieving their autonomy.
The Virada Project offers a developmental aid of at least R$ 350.00 per family, in addition to constant monitoring by the team of educators from the Rukha Institute.
The project presently reaches 102 families, and over one year of operation managed to get 95 per cent of children out of child labor.
The method used is based on respect and on placing value on diversity; on empowering the existing resources and building a bond between project teams, families, and local organizations.
