The song is dedicated to the Cerceris fumipennis wasp. It's part of the 100 Songs Project at johngovernale.com.

Thanks to my daughter, Sofrona, for singing with me. And to Pearl Dustin for loaning me a 1954 Fender guitar, on which I wrote and performed this song.

The emerald ash borer
Is something of a horror.
It's a beetle that does no good and
It's a menace to our woodland.

In the Midwest it's killed millions
Of ash tree, yes, millions.
Though it's presence we should not savor,
People do it a favor.

When an ash tree in a yard dies
It's cut down where it exulting stood.
And the owner gives some hard sighs,
Then goes camping with the resulting wood.
Goes camping with the resulting wood.

Introduced in a new area,
The borer spreads like malaria
And kills ash trees, which will go on
To be transported, and so on.

As much as we all dread it,
Without even straining,
With camp wood to help spread it,
The borer is obtaining,
The borer is obtaining

New ash trees to feed upon,
So let it be agreed upon
For the great and the higher good,
Don't transport your firewood.

For the great and the higher good,
Don't transport your firewood.

  • Ken,

    Thanks.

The vids in HD were done on the Zi6. The others, including this one, were done on a Canon A570 (I think that's right. It's my wife's.)

The Zi6 has pretty good sound for a built-in mic, which is why I bought it.

I live in Belfast and used to own a recording studio in Troy, Maine. I love your songs...and your voice sounds good!

ken, belfast (were your other vids taken on a Kodak Zi6?)
