The Bear Mt. Bridge opened in 1924. It was the world's longest suspension bridge in the world at that time. It was privately built, and the State of New York bought it in 1940 for $5 million.

My favorite bridge is the Whitestone Bridge with the Warren stiffening trusses. The Whitestone no longer has the trusses becuase they were excellerating wear and tear on the bridge and straining the cables.

One of my favorite bridges! And the stretch of Rt. 9 along the Hudson from Peekskill to the Bear Mountain Bridge is my favorite scenic drive. (Tho' there's a stretch of NY-97 along the Delaware northwest of Port Jervis that's almost as breathtaking.) And no, I've never motored along the Columbia River Gorge--that'd be nifty, too.

Yea it's a nice bridge. I agree on that stretch of NY-97 too ... from Narrowsburg to Port Jervis it's a nice drive.
