The existence of this recording was long thought to be just a rumor or perhaps a recording "lost" in the vaults at Capitol Records since it was omitted from the original release of Nat's only live album recorded at the Sands Hotel in 1960. But here it is in all its glory! This one is quite a send-up of rock and roll as Nat parodies not only the pop music of his day but a few of his own hits along the way.
"Mr. Cole Won't Rock And Roll" is quite a treat if you've never heard it, and an interesting commentary from one of the great voices of the 20th Century whose "star" was slowly fading from the pop scene along with that of many others who didn't sing rock and roll at this point in the early 60's. But as Nat voices at the end of the song, "I coulda if I'd a wanted..."
Well, this song does exactly show how many "adults" in the '50's thought about rock n' roll. Interesting he's also spoofing his own "Mona Lisa", which did get the rock n' roll treatment from both Carl Mann and Conway Twitty.
Of course, one could say that Nat King Cole himself helped "cause" rock n' roll, since his early jazz recordings influenced many rhythm and blues artists.
Oh well....

Thanks for posting this special performance by Mr. Cole. He had a wonderful sense of humor and certainly, "Could if I wanted to."
