http://schoolimprovement.com/topics/differentiation. Differentiated instruction is the key to ensuring that each student has the opportunity to learn and achieve. Students have a broad variety of backgrounds, skills, strengths, and learning styles, and teachers cannot possibly reach every student by using only one method of instruction. By using differentiated instruction, teachers can identify the best way to teach each student.

Most teachers have some knowledge of the theory of differentiation, but most feel intimidated to actually implement it in the classroom because it seems like a nearly impossible task. The School Improvement Network offers several resources that show teachers how to effectively implement differentiation in the classroom.

  • @drfoxcourt I feel as though standards are guidelines for what your tasks should be based on, but what is taught is up to the teacher. I would even go as far to say it is a game we nee to play meeting standard. For example in music: "why yes my students played an instrument today therefore they played alone or with others thus meeting standard 1"

The goal of a differentiated classroom help students reach the same goal (task) though another way of engagement. have a good one. thoughts?

  • So what are the goals of a differentiated classroom?

I understand the need to address students at their personal levels, but is there are still "standards" of state mandated frameworks. NCLB State standards is naturally at odds with differentiated instruction (causing bordom for some, and frustration for others to assure meeting standards), particularly in precisely defined disciplines of math and science.
