That was deffintely a foreign show, the footage is on their "12 wasted years" documentary. I think they just wanted to take the piss out of how crap it was to mime to songs.

Hey, I don't care if The Cult went "mainstream" - they were fucking amazing as a slightly alternative-rock band in the early 80s, and they were fucking amazing as a more glam-rock band during the late 80s. So, whoever complains about the music they produced isn't a true fan.

Hard to believe that this band wrote the most beautiful and intense lyrics before they went metal and wrote lines like "twistin like a cat on a hot tin shack" puh-lease

Top of the pops was a weekly british tv show giving a run down of the latest chart music and showcasing new songs. It played mainly pop songs and due to the limited recording time all performers mimed and the songs were usually shortened. Towards the end of its run there was a brief period where acts were encouraged to play live this was from about the late 90's onwards.
It was a legendary show but unfortunatley due to the changing media it lost its apeal and after 40+ yrs was finaly cancelled.

Actually i saw a video where maiden "Lip Synches" at TOTP? but they exchange instruments widway into the song and generally make fun of it

Yes, it's playback,not live.The Doors and Iron Maiden were the only two bands who refused ever to play on playback on TOTP.The only two bands who ever played live on TOTP.
