We went to an arcade in Portland, Oregon today called Ground Kontrol. It's mostly filled with very well-maintained arcade machines from the 1980's with a few from the 1990's thrown in. Best of all, almost all of them only cost 25 cents to play. It's just around the corner from the Portland 2600 meetings.

  • Is it cheaper than it used to be? Considering all these games are free downloads now, you'd need to cut the price down, I'd think.

  • @310sucks Most of them are 25 cent games, which I think is a great deal. And you don't get a cool atmosphere like this when you play emulators in your living room.

  • I wonder what their power bill is there.... Running all that stuff and screens nonstop.

  • I wonder if they ever retrofit old arcade machines with LCD screens inside to save power. Would we even notice that?

  • @rbcp 'course, and not just by filming them either.

Just because HF isn't played in tournaments anymore doesn't mean it's not as good as ST. I mean, ST isn't even played in major tournaments in the US. There was a single SBO qualifier this year in ST, that's it. EVO doesn't even have ST in their lineup anymore, and no, HDR does not count. Japan at least still plays ST competitively.

As for the damage output in HF, yes it's higher, you can't tech throws and there's no super meter. It all comes down to mind games and footsies.

LOL~! No. :3 You don't see Hyper Fighting tournaments anywhere except in some guys bedroom. ST is still played at major tournaments in the US and Japan. XD

    I mean, I love XvsSF but I know it's not better than MVC2. :)

Hyper Fighting is fun, but damage is so broken as well as its balance. Super Turbo has a bit more depth and better control of characters overall. I really dislike how ancient HF feels vs ST~ which just has a fresher curve for competition. I'd be at GK more if it had it.

  • @strikerk

    Hyper Fighting > ST =)

  • Oh man, what happened to the Super Turbo machine!? I went there and they only had Hyper Fighting. :( Super Turbo is waaaaay better for me.

  • @rbcp Actually, we did do that for X-Men, so we wouldn't have to use 2 monitors (like it was originally designed to use.) We at least try to upgrade the power supplies and lighting for game cabinets & pinballls wherever we can, to save on energy.

  • i go there instead of the avalon because they dont have a cover charge (always), so i use that 2.50 and get beer.
