Team project to create a train station in Valve Hammer SDK.
NOTE: Issues with lighting prevented us from lighting the level effectively.
Team Members: Edward McGurran and Anthony Walsh
Design Brief:
1.You are required to produce a custom made HL 2 playable level using the steam source SDK version of Valve Hammer.
2.You must work to the criteria previously set for your preparatory research work and in the teams you have agreed and emailed to me.
a)The era is modern day (now).
b)The country is England.
c)The season is winter.
d)The setting is a train station.
The train station must have at least the following:-
i)Train(s) and platforms.
ii)Ticket office.
iii)Public convenience.
iv)A number of shops.
v)Suitable platform furniture.
vi)Cityscape viewable from within the station only.
vii)Food outlet.
3.You must further your research to ensure you have an authentic setting accurate in detail, scale, period, custom, architecture and that looks believable.
4.The storyline is simple. A mystery virus has infected the population of England. You have just arrived at this train station after escaping your home town where you witnessed horrific scenes of inhuman behaviour. The platforms are empty, it appears that the train is empty and has been running with the driver slumped over the dead mans handle and has stopped using emergency brakes just before hitting the buffers. You leave the train and begin to investigate the station on foot. You are faced with a scene of (now you must decide how the scene will appear). You are not allowed to interact with any NPCs, however you can show dead NPCs if appropriate.
5.Your player character must be able to freely roam the level and enter a single building to observe the interior design. This may be any shop or food outlet. Again this should be set in the correct manner and use appropriate furniture etc.
6.There are no Game Mechanic / Game Play / Game Dynamic requirements for this level.
7.You are free to use whatever resources you feel are appropriate, including sound where necessary. (Copyright permitting)
8.There is no requirement to add weapons or power ups of any kind or to have any NPCs in the level so dont put them in.
9.Your level can be any size but I suggest you constrain it to the assignment brief requirements. Consider optimisation and also quality over quantity.
10.You must prepare documentation in the form of a report word which clearly outlines the research that you have undertaken. You should show the relevant facts that you have uncovered to produce your level and provide evidence relating to any architecture and textures used / produced detailing how they fit into the overall level scheme including the use of space. You must also include a bibliography and make clear any references. I expect this report to be written properly, third person, good structure, no mistakes and correct Harvard referencing system.
11. You must also produce a scale drawing using Microsoft Visio or other electronically viewable file that will work in the lab to show your level layout and planning. This will be restricted to geometry / architecture layout only as there are no objectives, or entities like weapons etc required.
12. You must include a suitable skybox in the level and other appropriate features. This will allow you to complete the Cityscape section of the assignment brief.
