Life threatening blood stream infections continue to be an urgent healthcare concern. With over 750,000 severe sepsis cases reported each year in the U.S., sepsis is a major public health problem that is consuming an increasing share of healthcare resources. Staphylococcus aureus continues to be the primary cause of bacteremia. The emergence of Methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA) as a healthcare associated infection has lead to a dramatic increase in the rate of Staph aureus bacteremia. Understanding the epidemiology, proper diagnosis, and treatment of Staph aureus baceremia is essential to the development of mechanisms to improve patient outcomes.
