BATF and the common vernacular and dictionary definition is silencer. You can call them suppressor if you want but that's not the actual name. It wasn't until the mid 70's when a writer from Soldier of Fortune who didn't quite understand how nouns work in English that anyone called them suppressors. Silencer is a name, not a function.

If the BATF is not enough you can look at the patent name filed by Hiram Maxim and Leading SILENCER producer and SilencerCo...Learning from video games is dumb
