very good tutorial... thanks... I still can't make it work for around a man in a dark uniform against a wood background.... maybe it's not meant for that sort of extraction?

In my experience it fails to work well with background and foreground being roughly the same (in terms of colour values on a channel by channel basis). For my complex work try Colour Range!

I'm afraid you do, Photoshop Elements may be best if you're a beginner as it's a fraction of the price of the full version Photoshop. Worth investigating anyway...
