Lithe Spirit

Subtitled "Wanita Desa Berjuang Melawan Adat-Istiadat" ("A Village Woman Struggles Against Tradition"). Choreography by Kompiang Metri-Davies, using mostly Balinese dance vocabulary and technique, with a bit of Javanese. Music by Dudley Brooks, inspired by Balinese and other Indonesian music, but not using any authentic elements except a Western approximation to the Indonesian "pelog" scale. Dancer: Kompiang Metri-Davies. In this style of dance, the audience is not necessarily expected to follow the story which inspired the dance, but merely to enjoy the beauty of the movements.

(For any Balinese experts watching: Because my music is strictly Western in form and technique, it was not possible for Ms Davies to choreograph it in the "correct" Balinese kawitan-pengawak-pengecet form.)
