Speaking at a CFR-sponsored event at the Newseum in Washington, the president and CEO of NPR, Vivian Schiller says she's encouraged by the amount of collaboration already underway in making investigative journalism sustainable, including on foreign policy issues. Quality, professional journalism can be sustained "through partnership, through collaboration and through multiple revenue streams, through a combination of philanthropic support, from reader support, from advertiser, sponsor, underwriter support," Schiller said. "This is the patchwork of the future." Schiller says a NPR recently launched an investigative unit that has delivered reports on issues such as veterans returning with traumatic brain injuries and the scope of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
