@sherryazure i would never go to that forum again. Sorry but the natural wild discus usually live in water parameters that are to acidic for most underwater plants to live. They live in murky dirty looking waters. Mostly underlined with decaying sticks, stumps, leaves etc. This why the water is commonly called "black water". Do to the tannins released by decaying plant matter etc. Clean water does not mean crystal clear. And if that is what that person was implying, i laugh at them.

tannins in the water does not mean dirty water... clean water can be very toxic as well (ammonia, so on) and no one I know who breeds discus says they need clear water (they do say they need specific qualities however)

This is untrue. The rivers and tributaries that Discus originate from are some of the cleanest on earth, with millions of gallons of clean water passing through every day.
