This is a scratch animation. I scratched onto black 16 mm leader with a razor blade, one frame at a time.
Made for 'Hand-Made film class,' at MassArt.
(For some reason the quality is really rough on this. My apologies!)

  • this is pretty cool! 16mm really does make the eyes bleed dosent it? :D

im also trying my hand at scratch animation using 8mm but im kind of confused about editing. Is there anyway to transfer it onto the computer for syncing sound and further editing? how did you edit yours?

  • I did this back when I was at Emerson college, and yes they had a system where a projector was hooked up into a tv of some sort which you could record off of and onto a mini-dv to later edit in the computer if needed.

  • I'm making a scratch film right now for an experimental film class, and as someone really struggling with using a blade on a frame that small OVER and OVER again for the same patterns; I think this is AMAAAAAAZING. I think unless someone really attempts this, they have absolutely no idea how difficult it is to even form a cohesive shape, and you've made eyes and eagles... seriously, I'm really impressed and very, very jealous. :)

  • Thanks. Yeah, it's a lot of work for sure. Glad you liked it, and best of luck with your own!

  • I really like the feel of this. Reminds me of "Morphametaphis."

  • Thanks! Yeah, it is sort of reminiscent, as they are both hand made things....Expect some more hand made films shortly! Yeah yeah!
