Airlines that ended during the 1980's. The Deregulation Act of 1978 was to afford opportunities for competition within the Airline industry. I was never a fan of Airline Deregulation, knowing it allowed a number of new start-up airlines, but also know many dedicated people lost their jobs, and the industry lost their expertise. Uncertain about A few Airlines left out, American International Airways (DC-9s), Emerald Air, Zenith International, but know they existed in the 1980's. Dates may be off, but tried to be accurate.

  • What a great video.. I worked for Capitol for 8 years until we closed our doors in 1985..

  • @jraio747

Hope U went on to work for another airline after Capitol. The 80's were tough, but still a good time to work in the industry if U were able to roll with the punches.

  • One small correction: it was actually Texas International, under the leadership of Frank Lorenzo, that bought Continental in a hostile stock purchase. CO's then leader Robert Six committed suicide shortly thereafter and Frank Lorenzo went on to create havoc upon the airline world for years afterwards.

Thanks for your comment, and for me, the "dark" memory of Frank Lorenzo. As I remember, it was Texas Air Holdings when retiring the Texas International name, and believe they were the creators of New York Air. I never saw an aircraft in the Texas International livery, but clearly remember the Continental strike, and witnessed Eastern Airlines being torn apart. Havco for the employees

  • I worked for Capitol too; what a scream. As soon as you would block into KJFK after a crossing, the guy would come in the cockpit and assign you back out again the next day. YUK !!!!!!!!

  • Cool music.

  • @tonyblkyn...i stand corrected. Too bad it wasn't Lorenzo instead

  • LOL, and I remember applying to every single one of them in my ambition to be a flight attendant. Was finally hired by Western Airlines, and the Pan Am a year and half later.

  • @MrGlb2012 Fact correction: Robert Six did not commit suicide, he retired from Continental, his successor A.L. Feldman was the one who committed suicide.

Brilliant's a strong word, I'm humbled! I feel I may have left out an important player or two that's now been forgotten. The tune, "Captain of her Heart" sung by "Double", had to be out 1985 or 1986. Music of the time.

  • Wow! These former airlines bring back some memories.. Good and Bad....

  • btw... you have some fantastic photos in this collection! Many that I have not come across already. In general I seem to avoid "tribute" videos of any subject content but this is one I've watched several times! kudos!!!
