Pastor Jim McClarty responds to 13 questions asked by a young Bible student, who wrote:

Blessings pastor Jim McClarty. My name is ___ and I'm currently a student at ____, majoring in Bible & Humanities with the intention of entering church ministry to teach/preach the word of God.

For one of my classes, it is required of me to interview two highly respected and experienced individuals working in the field of ministry I'm currently pursing to enter. This short interview consists of 13 questions based on your experience and knowledge as a church minister. I saw your video "A Few Words For Young People Going Into The Ministry" (http://youtu.be/R7wXdDtsB0E) on Zach Kuekker's YouTube channel, who is actually a friend of mine from Grace Community Church in Saint Cloud Florida. I know and understand how busy you are and highly appreciate you taking your time to responding to my email. Thank you, and may the Lord continue to pour out many blessings over you, your family, and your ministry.

  • Do you really need to go to college for Bible School?

  • Bible College is not a necessity, but training in doctrine, hermeneutics, etc. is vital. A good church will provide you the opportunity to learn those things, but it should be regular, systematic study. You don't want to be a "lose cannon," just making stuff up as you go. A deep familiarity with the Bible and its teaching is very important before you start teaching others.

  • Can a single man be a pastor, and, or minister?

  • Certainly. The apostle Paul was a single man and wrote about it. He saw his singleness as a benefit. (1Cor. 7:7-9) However, if you're going to be an effective help and counsellor to others, you won't be able to empathize about situations you've never actually encountered. So, being married is helpful. But, it's not an absolute necessity.

  • @Mountshilol The Holy Ghost isn't divorced from theology, especially when it is done by going into what the Bible teaches. You can do that in a local church or a formal institution, with the big words or without but regardless, Biblical theology is Holy Ghost theology...

  • Thx for sharing this :-) I think much of what u said also applies to a man getting ready to be a husband & father...? As in head of his own household?

  • the classroom for learning how to be a faithful pastor is in the place of prayer.

'where you say nothing can prepare someone for that is false'. The Holy Spirit is the one who prepares all who he anoints to serve as pastor. such a calling which is ever-filled with prayer. find me a pastor not given to much prayer, and i will show you a congregation not properly served by that pastor; whose preaching is met only with the results of man's labors instead of the Holy Spirit's anointing.

  • @SalvationByGraceOrg Then where is the Holy Ghost in all of this everyone can't just go to a bible school or take up a Liberal arts course to just understand hermeneutics and all these ologys. Where is the church bible studys
