@KuroshiOtaku It doesn't necessarily say that Light became a shinigami. He might have, and he might not. In the manga, Light went with Ryuk to reason with the Shinigami King(which still doesn't mean he became a shinigami) but in the anime it is only hinted that the new shinigami is Light. And the place between heaven and hell is called Mu. He has to feel the pain and suffering of anyone he kills with the Death Note, and as far as i know, Ryuk and the other shinigami aren't in pain all the time.
