This may be my fave Skip James song...so it's neat to hear a Piedmont-ized version. They stay true to Skip but reverently make it their own. I hope to catch these two next time they come to SW Va.
I saw them do this at the Bluebird Folk Festival, where Phil just accompanied by humming. It was one of the most moving performances I've ever seen. Compare it to Skip James on his 1960's recording: Blues from the Delta. John Cephas is a preeminent teacher of Skip James and Delta Blues, as well as the living legacy of Virginia's Piedmont Blues style.
Wiggins does a masterful job at keeping the harmonica pretty simple on this, and sings a little back up. Honestly, this is not my favorite version of the song-- but, it is really good nonetheless!
You are right, but this tune is from the Mississipi artist Skip James and played in his style. The harmonica doesn't work too well-best as a guitar piece.
Wow.....REALLY like the way they do this one.
