Post 1940s Victory Parade. Democracy Monument, Bangkok. ( Seri Thai ? )

Khun Pridi takes the salute at a military parade (Seri Thai??) at Democracy Monument.

He travels up Sanam Luang, past the Rattanokosin Hotel and turns right onto Ratchadamnoen Avenue. Arriving at the monument he hops out of his car in front of one of the four the viewing pavilions - the one that is now a McDonald's burger joint.

In the soundtrack you have jolly happy Thai folk singing about their delight of 24th June 1932 coup. Which wasn't really so much about them getting a constitutional democracy as to having a military based government lumped onto them, one that was intent on state building and getting the folk to ride a tide of 1930s nationalism.

I have tried to work out the date as it did not say on the tapes I have.

Records show that the monument was opened in 1939.

However, Pridi Banramyong is taking the salute, which is strange for 1939 as

Phibun was the prime minister.

Pridi became prime minister for a short time in 1946.

So it is either of those. I think it is more likely to be 1939,.

The day of the parade would have been the National Day as it was back then.

The music tells about the June 1932 coup which ended the absolute monarchy. The Khana Ratsadorn had made it a national holiday (which was later abolished by a military government). This must be the celebration of one such holiday, probably in 1947 before Pridi's government was overthrown by a coup on November.
