Finally! Last video of this series.
After finishing the coloring process in Corel Painter, I decided to create a rather simple background for the illustration in Photoshop. Backgrounds give your illustrations a finished look and usually make your character(s) stand out more.

I wanted a grungy, poster like background for Dante here. I choose a tear effect brush and apply them in a new layer, then rotate/scale them behind the character. Then I pick a metal pattern and fill the background with it. I use more special brushes and apply them and finally, I recolor the black to a dark-purplish gradient. Oh, also, a white very thick outline around Dante makes him stand out more, like if he was badly cut from somewhere. Add some grungy text with some cool phrases and you are finally done!

I hope you enjoyed these vids. I'll be working on some more soon... if you have any recommendations, feel free to comment!

  • What is the name of the brush u used for the background?

    (not the flower.)

  • @TemariNara97 The tear effect brush? I think it's precisely called "TEARS".

  • oh no, i can't download it. can't even make it as my background. what do i do?,,

  • Sorry, they are not supposed to be downloaded, just viewed :)

  • This may seem like a dumb question, but not only am I new to photoshop I have never taken a class for it (completely self taught), how are you moving the tear edged affects diagonally and stuff? like I know how to move it up and down but no idea how your turning it

  • It's a rotate function Photoshop CS brushes have. Google it and you'll find a lot of tips.
